Donny Schatz won the World of Outlaws Knoxville Nationals for the third year in a row. Schatz led the sweep of the Knoxville Nationals by Advanced Auto Parts World of Outlaws Drivers. Bell driver, Jason Meyers finished in second behind Schatz after leading the first 25 laps of the 30 lap contest.
During qualifying on Wednesday, Schatz put up the quickest lap of the four day event with a time of 14.897 seconds. This landed him a spot outside of the second row for the main event.
Meyers led 23 uninterruped laps to start the race but a caution on lap 23 lined up the drivers to restart. Schatz raced hard and went high to pass Meyers on turn four with five laps remaining.
"There's no question the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws guys are the premier drivers in the sport," said Schatz, "Jason set a great pace, but when you get to the last five laps of this race it's a whole different race because you do not want to make a mistake. He didn't make a mistake, but I just think we had a bit of an upper hand from winning it before. The Outlaws race so much and race so hard they definitely push everybody to the next level."
Schatz's win makes him the second driver in history to win the Knoxville Nationals at least three times. The other driver to achieve this feat is Bell driver, Steve Kinser.
Meyers has won six Outlaws contests this year and remarked on how tough the competition is, "I've said it all year, I think the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series is tougher than it has ever been. You've got five, six, seven, eight guys who are right there and another eight who could be there on any given night. It's very tough and we are pushing each other. We work every day to get a little bit better."
Donny Schatz's miniature replica helmet is available through www.bellracing.com. Schatz is the 2006 and 2007 World of Outlaws Champion.
Schatz wears the Bell Dominator and Jason Meyers wears the Bell GTX.
