Dan Wheldon ended a year long drought when he won the Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, April 27. Wheldon benefitted from a caution with 28 laps remaining in the 200 lap race. He was able to come into the pits for a refuel while the pits were closed, allowing him to stay out on the track when the race leader was in the pits. Once the pits were open, Wheldon headed in for a full stop and returned to the track near the front of the pack.
"It has been a little frustrating at times and to get the (No.) 10 car back to Victory Lane just shows that we could be back and we certainly mean a lot of business," said Wheldon after his win,"It was a real strong day."
Wheldon is off to a strong start to the season finishing third and fourth in the first two oval races. His win at Kansas sparked talk of an early Indy 500 favorite. "I think the win is good, but the biggest thing that you notice about this year is you pick up the wins when you can, but you can't have races out of the top five because the points are just that close," said Wheldon of the early 500 favorite speculation, "So it's important to score wins. I think this will help going into the month of May, but I don't think it means too much because it's just going to be tight there."
The 2003 Indy 500 winner and the rest of the IndyCar drivers will head to Indianapolis in the next few weeks to prepare for the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500.
