Who Is “Shawn Mize”? Shawn started racing go karts when he was just 8 in a home-made kart that him and his dad built. With this being his first year in racing, he only managed to pull off 7 top ten and 3 top five finishes. With one year under his belt, he hit the track on a very limited schedule, managing 9 top ten finishes, 6 top 5, and 2 wins in only 14 races. The next season Shawn moved up into the modified karts and was involved in a big wreck the 3rd night out. The kart was "band-aided" and raced the rest of the season and he managed a 5th place finish in the championship standings. 2003 was a big year for Shawn Mize. After building their own engine after 10 or so weeks of feeling under powered, Shawn went on a 8 week win streak. During that time they bought a jr. mini stock and he began practicing. Shawn sold his cart about half way through the go-kart season, while leading the championship points, to go and race mini's full time. During the years of karts the Mize Motorsports team traveled to Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana with a total of 39 wins between the tracks for the final year of racing modified karts. Shawn's mini stock from some local friends of theirs. His first race night, they went to look at a car in the pits. Shawn loved the car. His dad told him to climb into the car and check it out. The next thing he knew he was told that he was the next race out on the track so get in the chute. He raced that night with no practice at all, and had never ever driven a car before. “We finished, and that's all I can say” were Shawn’s words after the race…Shawn finished 7th in 2003 with just barley half a season of racing. In 2004 Shawn proved that winning wasn't everything in racing by being consistent every week and that led to winning the championship in 2004 with just one win. We traveled to several tracks thru-out Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, including the mini stock nationals in Abilene, TX. Shawn started racing street stocks in 05. They had bought the car from BBD Racing. That winter Shawn practiced about twice a week the entire winter putting around 2000 laps on the car before the season ever started. All that practice paid off when on the first night he finished 3rd place. From that night on, At the age of 12, Shawn had gained the respect of many drivers at Cowtown Speedway. Later he won 3 heats that year and finished 5th in the championship standings. The next year out Shawn won 5 heats and finished 4th in the championship standings. Coming close to winning 3 different times only to have a motor blow, distributor die, or snapping the left rear axel. “That’s just part of racing” Shawn stated. His most memorable memory in the street stocks was the Topless 100 race in 2006 when Shawn and a local hot shot ran 25 laps within a car length of each other, Shawn ended up second by about 1/8" of a car when the checkered flag was waving. In 2007,Shawn decided to sell his street stock after 3 weeks of racing to pursue his dream of racing a sprint car Sprints: Shawn’s first year in sprints was a long and rough season. They spend the remender of 2007 building their car, and managed to get it out on the track with 8 races remaining in the season. With only his first night being a DNF, due to a wreck, he managed to run three more races finishing 12th, 11th, 17th. On their fifth night out, Shawn was running second in his heat race when their motor let go. Putting the car back up on jack-stands, they immediately turned their focus to preparation for 2008. 2008 was Mize Motorsports first full year racing sprint cars in the ASCS series as well as all local racing within 250 miles. It was a rough start for the team, blowing up 4 motors over the winter season. Finally, they switched to a different machining company and the problem was fixed. As Shawn began getting more, and more comfortable racing, new problems began to emerge. The “weakest links” were discovered throughout the car, and fixed to continue racing. The team also made numerous trips to run with the American Sprint Car Series tour, mainly running with the Sooner, and Gulf South series. Better results showed with the gulf south region finishing in the top ten in all four of the races attempted. And as for at Shawn’s local track, they could have not been more happy with their results. Over 19 races, Shawn finished in the top ten 9 times, and with one top 5. Shawn gained many drivers respect over this season, and many people have recognized his talents. Plans are already being set in for the 2009 racing season. MIZE INC. purchased a MAXIUM CHASSIS and is already underway to building a top notch car for the 2009 season. His plan is to race as much as he can on the American Sprint Car Series in the new Lone Star Series, which manly races in Texas anywhere from Dallas to Houston. Shawn tries his best to make money, but being a full time college student it is not easy. Shawn graduated high school a year early with a 3.75 GPA, and is currently attending the University of Texas in Arlington to major in Mechanical Engineering. Shawn does all the work on his car and loves to do it. He devotes 30 plus hours a week just to make sure his car will be ready by the weekend. Shawn has devoted much of his life to racing and he has given up a lot to just race.
