Allan became involved with racing at birth when his father, Cliff Lawrence, was racing a mini-stock at Riverside Speedway, Lakeside Speedway, and Olympic Stadium. He grew up hearing the clatter from the garage and the engine roaring. Allan spent time in the garage with his dad, but just as he got old enough to really get involved and able to contribute more his dad retired from driving. Local Kansas City dirt tracks closed up and Cliff didn’t have the funds nor desire to race on pavement. In 1993 Allan began to help Rick Beebe on the ARTGO late model touring series. Countless nights were spent in the shop with Rick where Allan began to learn the tricks to pavement racing. Chassis setup was very important and car maintenance was vital as the ARTGO races were 100 laps or more. Allan learned a lot from Rick during this time and he and Rick even tackled some big out of town races on their own! The 1994 season saw Rick move into the ASA series and Allan became less involved in the organization that was being built with full time employees. The summer of 1994 Allan got his first experience behind the wheel of a racecar. A 1970 Chevelle was built by Allan and his father and they competed in the pure stock class on the pavement at Lakeside a few times. Also in the works that summer was a 1977 Monte Carlo to be raced in the Charger division at Lakeside. That car was completed at the end of 1994 and Allan was able to start a few races with it. In addition in the summer 1994 Allan traveled with Jeff Klem and his KC Colors race team to numerous ARTGO events. Allan was able to share his experience from helping Rick to help Jeff to a best finish of 3rd at his home track of Lakeside Speedway. The long winter had Allan excited to go back racing and on opening night in 1995 Allan scored his first victory! He backed that up with 2 more wins that season and was in the thick of the points championship before a terrible crash left him in a comma for 3 days. Even missing the final 3 races of the season Allan finished 5th in the points and won Rookie of the Year honors in the Charger class. With the recommendations of doctors it was a mutual decision with Allan and Cliff to put racing on the backburner at this time and focus on school. Allan attended Pittsburg State University and in 1999 received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and minor in Mathematics. That same year he was able to run a few races in his repaired car from 1995 in the sportsman late model division at Lakeside Speedway. In 2000 when Lakeside changed over to a dirt surface Allan and Cliff got a new excitement to go racing. No longer would cost drive so much of the racing but setup and driver instead. They ‘converted’ the pavement car into a dirt car and would compete in the Grand National division. Allan was able to finish 4th in his first race on dirt in April of 2000. He went on to finish 4th in the season championship as well with numerous top 5 finishes. In 2001 a new car was built by Allan and Cliff and they raced that car until 2005, when another car was built with a new suspension that allowed Allan to learn more about how the up and coming modified suspensions were working. After amassing two runner up points championship finishes and a record of 6 wins, 71 top 5, and 100 top 10 finishes in his 137 Grand National starts Allan decided to move up to the fiercely competitive modified division in 2007. It was a year of putting groundwork in place for Allan and his new formed team. He lost the help of his main pit crew, his Father Cliff and Uncle Jake. Allan struggled through 2007 with mechanical issues and never got a good handle on his modified. However, through perseverance, Allan was able to cap off the year with an 8th place finish at Lakeside, his best finish of the season! 2008 brought his first modified feature win at Lakeside Speedway on May 23rd. He followed this up with a win on June 6th as well. Allan believes the foundation was formed in 2007, the structure put in place in 2008, and now believes he will be a factor for the win each weekend in 2009. Keep up with the race team throughout the season at www.AllanLawrenceRacing.com. If we are at a track near you be sure to stop by and say hello!
